The Indian Railways is capable of providing
reasonable assurance regarding almost every area, barring one; this is the 100%
confirmation of a non-confirmed travel ticket. So many factors come into play,
such as holiday season, the vacation rush, shortage of trains to accommodate a
rising number of passengers, booking well in advance or delay in booking,
emergency travel, etc. Thus, if you are awarded a PNR number with a
non-confirmed status, you remain on tenterhooks until the actual day of travel.
Why Do We Need PNR?
It is indeed commendable that the Indian Railways
have come up with the idea of PNR. Do you know what this code stands for? It is
a recording of each passenger’s unique details, such as name of self, co-passengers
traveling with self, age of each individual, gender, address, date of booking,
telephone number, date of journey, etc. Such details are essential, for there
are millions of Indians traveling by various trains across the country, every
single day. So many people have similar first names or last names. In the
absence of this unique code, known as Passenger/Name Recording, which captures every
person’s specifications separately, life would become terribly harrowing for
the staff of the Indian Railways. You should be happy that no other person has
the same PNR number as yours; it will be easy to identify you.
When is the PNR Generated?
Please note that the 10-digit PNR number shows up
only in three kinds of instances. One of them is when the IndianRailway PNR status declares CNF, that is, a confirmed ticket. The
Indian Railways has made it possible to book around three months in advance.
You will be able to view your unique identification on the upper left-hand side
of your ticket. Your ticket will also display the coach and berth numbers.
Sometimes,
your berth is not confirmed. However, you still stand a good chance of
traveling in comfort, for someone may cancel his/her reservation. Thus, you are
put on the Reservation against Cancellation (RAC) list, along with your PNR
number.
The third
instance refers to WL, that is, Waiting List. The chances of your receiving
confirmation are extremely slim. Even after all the RAC seats are filled up,
there should be some leftovers. Either cancel your ticket (you may not enter a
reserved compartment), or travel in the unreserved category.

Now, you need not depend on the official website of
the Indian Railways alone; take recourse to private websites like travelkhana.com,
which are easier to access. You may use your mobile or computer to access their
portal. When you come to the home page of this website, move down to the bottom
of the page. You will see a category called ‘Services.’ Find PNR and click on
it. You will be taken to a web page, wherein an empty box requests you to key
in your special number. Do so, and hit the button, check status.
